The Parliament sessions in Dewan Rakyat has been going full swing since last week and netizens have been having a field day watching our politicians do their thing.

In another incident that happened today, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Azmin Ali was accused of “racial stereotyping” when presenting his case about the Total Industry Volume (TIV) for the automotive sector and what steps will the government be taking to help the automotive industry.

Azminali

One of the steps the government will be taking is sales taxes exemption for vehicles that are assembled in the country. Now, here, he used an example for the situation.

“For example, if Mak Cik Kiah purchased a Perodua Myvi that’s assembled domestically, she will have to pay a price of RM44,590 but with a sales tax exemption, she will only have to pay RM43,029.”

He gave another example but this time involving Mr Ong.

“Another example is Mr Ong buying an imported Mercedes Benz S560, he has to pay the price of RM658,888.”

This is where he got interrupted by Shah Alam MP, YB Tuan Khalid Samad who questioned him why he used the example of the Malay person buying a Myvi while the Chinese person buys a Mercedes, claiming that the minister is using racial stereotypes.

Azmin Ali then humorously retaliated that he can use different examples and said that now Mak Cik Kiah is the one buying a Mercedes. The point made by Shah Alam’s MP was further supported by Bangi MP, Wang Jianmin who said there’s no need for racial stereotypes.
